There is an “unwritten law” in anime that never seems to break: sooner or later, you get a crew — a group of people gathered together in the most intimidating way possible.
And honestly, it makes sense. Humans are social creatures. We are wired for pack behavior. It is instinct.
If you are stepping into Jigokuraku: Hell’s Paradise, then you cannot ignore the Seven Great Tensen — especially Rien, the leader of this entire superhuman collective.
This Rien explained analysis breaks down who she really is, what inspired her character, and what kind of power is required to stand at the top of the Great Tensen.
1. Rien Explained: The Inspiration Behind Her Character
When people mention Jigokuraku, one of the first things that tends to stand out is the author’s endless religious inspiration.
It is not simply part of the world’s backdrop. It is built directly into the construction of the characters, especially designs that feel heavy with faith and symbolism, like the Tensen.
The entire Gokuraku island is basically a product of Jofuku’s experimentation. He researched and “stitched together” the Tao of different beings in pursuit of immortality.
The Tensen are the hybrid result of plant Tao fused with humans. That may be exactly why their names are based on flowers.
Why Rien’s Name Refers to the Lotus
Rien is no exception.
“Rien” literally refers to the lotus.
The meaning of that name may be connected to Rien’s status. Compared with other flowers, the lotus carries enormous symbolic weight.
It has philosophical meaning, connects to concepts such as yin–yang and the five elements, and also functions as a religious symbol.
In Buddhism, the lotus represents cleansing purity — something clear, untouched, and refined.
Since Rien is the leader of the Tensen, the name feels as though it points toward the highest nobility: the “top-tier divinity” of Gokuraku island.
The Eight Immortals and Lü Dongbin
There are also details suggesting that the Tensen may take inspiration from the Eight Immortals — Hassen (八仙) in Chinese Taoism.
Rien’s imagery shares similarities with Lü Dongbin, one of the most widely known immortals, who is often depicted with a gourd containing an immortality medicine.
Lü Dongbin is associated with titles such as “Master Pure-Yang” and “Imperial Lord of Blessing and Protection.”
Fugen Jōtei and the Highest Deity Fugen
In Rien’s first introduction, the people of Gokuraku island revere her as Fugen Jōtei, or the Highest Deity Fugen.
Fugen (普賢) is the name associated with a Bodhisattva figure described as having the ability to manifest across the ten directions of the Dharma realm.
That inspiration may connect directly to Rien’s puppet control, which allows her influence to exist across multiple bodies.
The name “Rien” also echoes the lotus association often connected with Fugen, as well as the Lotus Sutra that Fugen protects.
Going further into Rien’s symbolism could easily become a religious deep dive.
But inspiration is only the raw material. It is the clay.
To truly understand Rien, we have to step into the world of Jigokuraku itself.
2. Rien’s Role in the Story of Hell’s Paradise
Rien is introduced as a Tensen — the ruler of Gokuraku island and the one in control of the entire island.
She is one of its “immortal gods,” and her power is portrayed as completely unmatched.
The Young Rien Is Only a Puppet
Most of the time, Rien appears in a male-presenting body.
One detail is impossible to miss: a long lock of hair covering the left side of the face.
But what people see is not her true body.
The “young Rien” is essentially a puppet — a recreated image of what she looked like in her youth.
In reality, after living for more than a thousand years, Rien’s original body has already grown old and begun to arborify.
The Rien everyone encounters is a doll-like vessel controlled through Tao energy.
Rien’s Personality and View of Humanity
Rien is always terrifyingly calm, if not completely emotionless.
Her focus is almost never on people. It is on one thing: researching the Elixir of Life.
To her, humanity is beneath her.
Humans have one role: materials — resources used to produce Tan.
When her plan is disrupted, Rien does not feel fear. She becomes irritated.
With her overwhelming Tao power, she sees humans trying to defeat her as pure stupidity. Why would something so inferior even try?
Why Chobei Interests Rien
There is one exception.
Even though she looks down on humans, Rien becomes interested when something involves Tao, because that is worth studying.
The clearest example is her meeting with Chobei.
Instead of immediately crushing him, Rien holds back and explains Tao cultivation to him.
In return, she wants to research his Tao power.
Sadly, Shugen appears just as Rien’s plan is approaching its final step.
If the timing had been different, we might have seen another “yin–yang exchange, all things multiply and bloom” moment, just like when Rien met Chobei.
How Rien Treats the Other Tensen
With the other Tensen, Rien shows a surprisingly gentle side.
She treats them like family, and family is supposed to stay united and love one another.
No internal conflict. No infighting. Rien forbids it.
When Jofa injures Jujin, Rien steps in and effectively reminds everyone:
Only I am allowed to do that.
When she discovers that Mudan has died, Rien personally goes outside to search for the killer.
Rien sometimes lectures the Tao practitioners who serve under her, teaching and guiding them in Tao.
But her concern stops there.
The Tensen are unified by a shared wish and a shared goal. The moment someone deviates from that common objective, Rien punishes them as a traitor.
That is exactly what happens with Mei.
Rien destroys Mei’s tanden and expels her from the palace, even though Mei and Rien were among Jofuku’s earliest disciples.
3. Rien, Jofuku, and the Origin of the Tensen
After everything else, one truth stays constant:
Rien only truly cares about the elixir.
The secret behind that obsession is hidden inside her laboratory.
Rien was never “just” a Tensen.
She is actually Jofuku’s wife.
Everything she does serves one purpose: reviving her husband.
- First, she created the puppet known as Rien.
- Then, all the other Tensen were born from Rien’s original Tao source.
In other words, the Tensen are essentially copies of Rien.
Over time, Rien’s temperament became more brutal because her original body continued progressing further into arborification.
That forced her to rush her research.
It also meant she could only control the puppet remotely from a distance.
This was essentially a super-ultra-VIP love-driven project — and it almost worked.
That tells us exactly what kind of enemy Rien is.
When love turns into obsession, it becomes unpredictable.

4. Rien’s Intelligence and Elixir of Life Research

Rien is an elite researcher of Taoism.
She understands Tao on a deep level and has spent her time trying to create the Elixir of Life.
Most of her work happens inside her laboratory, located in the main palace hall where the elixir is refined.
In the experimental process, Rien harvests life from humans the way someone might harvest honey.
She extracts it, refines it, and turns it into a pill that drains away vitality.
Banko and the Large-Scale Waitanhua Flower
Rien does not stop at ordinary experiments.
She creates Banko — a massive, large-scale Waitanhua flower designed to process an absurd maximum amount of Tan at once.
I Ching Divination
Rien also knows how to use I Ching divination.
The I Ching is not simply a fortune-telling gimmick.
It is considered a field gathering the full essence of ancient Chinese scholarship.
Legends say it was once taught to kings and rulers. It is also regarded as a root source of feng shui.
And here is the frightening part:
Give Rien a single name, and she can read that person’s fate through the I Ching’s hexagrams.
Because the I Ching never lies, this gives Rien and the Tensen an unfair advantage in how they operate.
Rien’s intelligence is shown most clearly through the bizarre creations spread across the island — things that affect people indirectly while leaving a deep psychological impression.
5. Rien Explained: Her Combat Power and True Immortal Status
Rien’s fighting ability is direct, crushing, and overwhelmingly dominant against anyone standing in front of her.
When the story first explains what Tao can do, the first benefit mentioned is simple:
Tao allows someone to obtain the body — and the strength — of a god.
Rien is the proof.
In the three-way battle, Rien defeats Shugen and Gabimaru with ease.
That is extraordinary because Shugen is regarded as a top-tier Asaemon of the Yamada line, while Gabimaru is called the strongest ninja in the history of Iwagakure.
Even Jikka — the man with 100% accurate intuition — says that it would not matter if they fought Rien 10,000 times.
They would not win a single round.
Rien calls herself a True Immortal, a rank sitting at the absolute top compared with the other immortals.
6. Rien’s Tao Attribute and Control Over Tao
Is Rien’s Attribute Earth or Wood?
Rien’s Tao attribute is Earth, as revealed by Mei in Chapter 56.
There is, however, one conflicting detail.
During the battle with Shugen, Rien also confirms that she is Wood.
Personally, I think this is an author mistake.
In the final battle, Rien is countered by Sagiri and Shion, and Sagiri is Wood.
In the Five Elements system — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — neighboring elements support one another, while separated elements counter one another.
That means Wood counters Earth.
Based on the actual combat confirmation, Rien’s attribute is Earth.
One Thousand Years of Tao Training
After one thousand years of training, Rien’s Tao reaches a level that immediately alarms Chobei.
Chobei is extremely sensitive to his environment and adapts at an extraordinary rate.
The moment he comes into contact with Rien’s Tao, he concludes that she is far more dangerous than the other Tensen.
Controlling Living and Non-Living Things
Rien’s power extends beyond raw aura.
She can control the Tao of both living and non-living things.
She demonstrates this to Chobei by lighting a single incense stick.
When she pilots her ship out to sea, she uses Tao to ensure the ship is not obstructed by anything, while simultaneously controlling the flames on board.
Earlier, Rien even restricted her own power to avoid damaging the cargo.
Even while holding back, she can fight off an entire squad of Iwagakure ninja.
Shija — the shinobi chosen by the village chief as the next-generation strongest ninja of Iwagakure — admits that he would have no chance if Rien fought seriously.
His only option for obtaining the Elixir of Life is to create chaos and steal it during the confusion.
7. Rien’s Ship and the Paradise Butterflies
Rien’s ship represents the final step of her love-driven plan.
Stored on board are the Paradise Butterflies — a complete Tan sample.
Rien’s goal is to transform all of ancient Japan into one gigantic Waitanhua flower.
She intends to refine a medicine capable of reviving both Jofuku’s body and soul.
Because she has reached the final step and has almost no time left, Rien’s actions on the ship become extremely violent.
She stops caring about everything else.
All that matters is the objective.
8. Rien’s Puppet Bodies, Regeneration, and Kishikai
A Dual-Body Puppet System
The “immortal Rien” seen fighting is only a copy of herself.
Rien controls these copies remotely, functioning through a dual-body system.
Her main copy runs the experiments, commands the Tensen, and fights enemies.
She also creates additional copies whose role is to care for her original body, already arborified and lying on a bed.
Regeneration and the Tanden
As a Tensen, Rien can regenerate after losing parts of her body.
However, that regeneration becomes restricted when she faces someone using Wood-attribute Tao, the element countering her Tao.
The only way to destroy the puppet body is to destroy the tanden, also called the plant ovule.
Naturally, Wood is required to do it.
Changing Sex to Circulate Yin and Yang Tao
Rien can change sex to circulate Yin and Yang Tao throughout the body.
In the final battle, when the humans push her beyond her limit, she says she will return to her true body and stop caring whether it is Yin or Yang.
According to Rien, Yin grants far greater focus.
Kishikai and the Six-Armed Form
In the Kishikai state, Rien gains six arms, massively increasing her combat ability.
With only a small portion of Tao, she can cause her entire ship to be destroyed.
Her speed and reflexes become noticeably sharper.
She catches Gabimaru before he can activate his ability and sends him flying.
Even when Sagiri uses the countering Tao attribute, it barely affects Rien.
However, Kishikai consumes an enormous amount of Tao.
Rien can maintain this state for only half an hour.

One of the most interesting elements in Jigokuraku is the way the author handles emotion, especially love.
Love is the engine pushing Rien forward.
It drives her to study Tao, train for a thousand years, and reach a state of immortality.
But that same love is also her weakness.
The moment her husband’s remains are threatened, Rien’s emotions swing violently.
That emotional instability weakens her Tao and creates a massive opening.
In the end, emotion is also the reason Rien chooses to let go of everything.
The focus on love is not incidental.
Boss-level Rien is so overwhelmingly powerful that even after her tanden is cut, she could still wipe out the entire main cast if she wanted to.
That is the kind of monster Rien is: the leader of the Tensen, a True Immortal, and an existence in a completely different league.
