Life moves like a heartbeat. It rises, falls, steadies, and breaks its rhythm again.
That is why Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is not merely a bright story about a broken man receiving a second chance. Every step Rudeus Greyrat takes toward happiness is shadowed by the possibility of loss.
Nowhere is that truth more devastating than in the alternate future recorded in the diary of his older self.
This Rudeus dark future is the timeline where one small decision opens the door to a chain of tragedies: Roxy dies, Sylphiette is lost, Eris gives her life for him, and Rudeus becomes the very kind of person he once swore never to be again.
1. The Life Rudeus Built Before the Tragedy
The diary’s tragedy hurts because it begins at a point when Rudeus has finally earned something close to peace.
At around eighteen years old, he lives in a large home with his family. He has created enough space to care for his mothers, his wives, and his first child. Sylphiette has given him the warmth of a home. Roxy has returned to his life as both teacher and wife. Lucy represents the future he once believed he did not deserve.
Outside the house, Rudeus is respected and feared as a powerful magician. Beside him are two close friends who have repeatedly supported him: Cliff Grimoire and Zanoba.
This happiness is not accidental. Rudeus has spent his second life trying to learn from failure, help the people around him, and become someone different from the isolated man he once was.
That is what makes the alternate future so cruel: it does not destroy a man who has nothing. It destroys a man just after he finally learns what it means to have everything.
2. Roxy and the Magic Stone Disease
The chain of tragedy begins when Hitogami, the Man-God, tells Rudeus to inspect the basement of his home.
Rudeus trusts him.
He finds nothing unusual and leaves, unaware that his visit allows an infected rat to escape. The rat carries Magic Stone Disease, an incurable illness that gradually crystallizes the victim’s body.
The infected rat contaminates food inside the house. Roxy later eats it.
The disease affects her because she is pregnant. It threatens both Roxy and the unborn child inside her.
The Only Possible Cure
Cliff identifies the illness with his Eye of Identification. Ordinary Detoxification Magic cannot cure it. The only hope is God-tier Detoxification Magic.
The required chants are recorded in a sacred spellbook held inside a cathedral in the Holy Kingdom of Milis. Access is restricted to people of archbishop rank or higher.
Rudeus, Cliff, and Zanoba have no time to negotiate.
They use teleportation circles to reach Milis and attempt to steal the book.
They are discovered almost immediately.
The escape becomes a battle. The teleportation circle they planned to use is destroyed, and the group becomes wanted throughout the Milis region. Cliff is poisoned during the fighting and dies soon afterward.
Rudeus saves the spellbook, but loses one of his closest friends before he can even return home.
When Rudeus and Zanoba finally arrive, they are too late.
Half of Roxy’s body has already turned into violet crystal.
She is dead.
Elinalise Dragonroad, Cliff’s pregnant wife, receives the news that her husband will never return. Rudeus is left staring at the result of a journey in which he sacrificed everything and saved no one.
3. Why Roxy’s Death Destroyed Rudeus
To understand the scale of Rudeus’s collapse, we have to understand what Roxy represents in his life.
She is not merely his second wife.
Roxy is the person who teaches him magic—the ability that becomes the foundation of his entire second life. Rudeus himself recognizes that without her guidance, he might have remained trapped inside the house, reading books and refusing to face the world.
The First Time Roxy Saves Him
In his previous life, Rudeus becomes a shut-in who rejects the world before the world can reject him again.
That fear survives his reincarnation.
Roxy is the first person to lead him beyond the gate of his home. By doing so, she helps him confront the trauma that has controlled him for years.
She does not merely teach him how to cast magic.
Roxy teaches Rudeus how to step outside.
The Second Time Roxy Saves Him
Years later, Paul Greyrat dies protecting Rudeus inside the Teleportation Labyrinth.
Rudeus sinks into guilt over Paul’s death and the parents he abandoned in his first life. No one in that world can fully understand the memories he carries from Earth.
Roxy still reaches him.
She gives him comfort when he no longer knows how to stand on his own, becoming the emotional support that helps him return to his family.
Roxy is tied to both of Rudeus’s recoveries: the child who learns to leave his house, and the grieving son who learns to keep living after Paul’s death.
That is why failing to save her destroys something fundamental inside him.
Roxy had stood beside him in his darkest moments. When her own final moment arrived, he was not there.
He could not comfort her.
He could not protect their unborn child.
He could not even say goodbye.
Rudeus does not simply lose Roxy. He loses the person who had twice shown him a path back to life.
4. Sylphiette and the Collapse of His Family
After Roxy’s death, Rudeus becomes dependent on alcohol.
When he is sober, he remembers her and cries. When he drinks, he lashes out, sleeps, and tries to bury the grief until he can no longer feel it.
Sylphiette watches her husband disappear in front of her.
She tries to comfort him. She understands how deeply he loved Roxy, and she cares about Roxy as well. She offers patience, closeness, and the only home Rudeus still has left.
Rudeus rejects her.
Part of him is afraid that if he sleeps beside Sylphiette in that condition, he will only vent his anger and grief on her. But instead of explaining that fear, he turns his pain into cruelty and drives her farther away.
Eris Returns at the Worst Possible Time
Around this period, Eris returns after five years of training.
She has spent those years trying to become strong enough to stand beside Rudeus and protect him.
But Rudeus still remembers only the wound left by her unexplained departure.
When she confronts him and tries to force him to wake up, he sees violence rather than love. Their inability to communicate turns every meeting into another reason for him to resent her.
The Betrayal Sylphiette Cannot Ignore
Eventually, Rudeus begins visiting brothels.
Sylphiette discovers the truth when he returns home carrying the scent of another woman.
For her, the betrayal is devastating.
Rudeus is the person who saved her as a child, taught her, gave her strength, and became the center of the family she had always wanted. She has spent years trying to become a wife capable of protecting and supporting him.
Even after being hurt, Sylphiette blames herself. She believes that if she had been better, perhaps she could have healed him before he sought escape elsewhere.
She eventually leaves to rejoin Princess Ariel Anemoi Asura, who is returning to the Asura Kingdom to fight for the throne.
Rudeus Arrives One Step Too Late Again
When Rudeus finally realizes what he has done, he follows Sylphiette to Asura, hoping to apologize and bring her home.
Ariel’s coup fails.
Sylphiette and Luke are killed by the Water God and a North Emperor. Ariel is captured.
In the diary, Rudeus reaches the capital and finds the bodies of Ariel’s followers displayed as criminals. Sylphiette is among them, missing an arm and bearing a deep wound across her face while people throw stones at the dead.
The woman who once offered him everything is gone before he can give her a proper apology.
Rudeus burns Sylphiette’s body—and then burns everyone who tries to stop him.
At that moment, the family he built is effectively over.
5. How Future Rudeus Lost His Humanity
Roxy’s death breaks Rudeus.
Sylphiette’s death transforms the broken pieces into something unrecognizable.
The man who once avoided killing whenever possible begins to kill without restraint. Revenge against Hitogami becomes the only purpose he has left.
He cuts himself off from his family. Only Aisha continues to maintain contact with him for a time.
He spends more time in brothels, treats people as tools, and eventually commits acts of sexual violence. The moral boundaries that once distinguished the second Rudeus from the man he had been on Earth disappear.
From Pacifist to Avenger
- He becomes dependent on alcohol.
- He abandons his marriage vows.
- He kills anyone he believes stands between him and Hitogami.
- He grows suspicious of almost everyone, including Eris.
- He pursues power long after there is anyone left for him to protect.
Future Rudeus becomes stronger than ever, but strength no longer leads anywhere.
He develops powerful new forms of magic, including Gravity Magic, Electricity Magic, Voice Magic, advanced Magic Armor, and eventually Time Travel Magic.
Every achievement arrives after the people who would have celebrated it are already gone.
The tragedy of Future Rudeus is not that he becomes weak. It is that he becomes terrifyingly powerful after losing every reason to use that power well.
6. The Sylphiette Automaton
One of the most painful symbols in the diary emerges from Zanoba’s automaton research.
An artificial being is created in Sylphiette’s image. It looks like her, behaves gently, and can think and act on its own.
For a moment, it seems to offer Future Rudeus an imitation of the happiness he destroyed.
But an imitation cannot replace a human life.
The automaton does not return Sylphiette to him. It only reminds him that the real Sylphiette—the childhood friend who became his wife and mother of his child—will never come back.
Unable to endure that reminder, Rudeus destroys it with his own hands.
7. Eris and the Regret That Came Too Late
Eris is the last of Rudeus’s three great loves still alive in this timeline.
She has never stopped loving him.
After the Teleportation Incident, Rudeus becomes the person Eris trusts more than anyone else. He guides her across the Demon Continent, protects her without treating her as a burden, and gives her something resembling a family after she loses everything.
When Orsted nearly kills Rudeus, Eris realizes how powerless she is.
She leaves for the Holy Land of Swords not because she wants to abandon him, but because she wants to become strong enough to stand beside him as an equal.
Her letter fails to communicate that intention.
Rudeus interprets her departure as rejection. The misunderstanding scars him for years.
She Keeps Returning
In the dark future, Eris repeatedly approaches Rudeus.
She is not skilled with words. She tries to reach him through action—following him, protecting him from enemies, and fighting him when she believes pain is the only thing capable of waking him up.
Rudeus misreads every attempt.
He convinces himself that Eris may be one of Hitogami’s apostles. Love, protection, and persistence all look like manipulation to a man who no longer trusts anyone.
The Battle Against Atofe
Rudeus eventually seeks information from Atoferatofe Raibaku, the Immortal Demon King commonly called Atofe.
The encounter becomes a battle against Atofe and her imperial guard.
Rudeus grows careless.
Eris throws herself into danger to save him.
She dies because she refuses to watch Rudeus die in front of her again.
Only after her death does Ghislaine explain the truth.
Eris had loved Rudeus all along.
The woman he viewed as an enemy had followed him because she could not abandon him, no matter how far he fell.
Rudeus finally understands Eris’s love at the exact moment he loses the chance to answer it.
8. The Deaths That Left Rudeus Alone
Eris’s death is not the end of the diary’s losses.
The Church of Milis continues hunting Rudeus and Zanoba because of the stolen God-Class Detoxification spellbook.
Over time, the people still connected to Rudeus are killed:
- Zanoba, the friend who had shared his research and remained beside him through years of darkness.
- Julie, Zanoba’s disciple and family.
- Ginger, Zanoba’s loyal attendant.
- Aisha, the younger sister who continued contacting Rudeus after he withdrew from the rest of the family.
The diary does not clearly record what happens to Lucy, Norn, or Lilia.
Eventually, Future Rudeus has no known loved ones left alive around him.
He hunts demons, kings, and anyone who might possess information about Hitogami. He massacres enemies until killing becomes repetitive rather than meaningful.
Then he discovers the worst possible truth:
Even after decades of revenge, he still cannot reach Hitogami.
Rudeus learns that Hitogami exists in the Void World, inside the six-sided structure of the world. Reaching him requires the ancient treasures connected to the Dragon Race.
Future Rudeus cannot gather everything he needs within his remaining lifespan.
He has spent most of his life becoming strong enough to take revenge on an enemy he will never meet.
9. Future Rudeus’s Final Gamble
Old, exhausted, and almost out of hope, Future Rudeus finally turns toward one possibility he has never attempted:
Instead of defeating Hitogami in the future, he will prevent the future from being created.
He develops a form of Time Travel Magic using knowledge connected to the Dragon God’s research.
The spell is extraordinarily dangerous. Future Rudeus knows that failure could kill him or create consequences he cannot predict.
But he has nothing left to lose.
If the spell succeeds, he can reach his younger self before the basement door is opened.
He can see Roxy and Sylphiette alive again—even if only for a moment.
He uses nearly all of his mana and launches himself into the past.
The journey destroys his body. Much of him does not survive the passage through time, leaving him without the lower half of his body and missing vital organs.
He still completes his mission.
Future Rudeus warns his younger self not to enter the basement. He tells him to doubt Hitogami without openly opposing him, consult Nanahoshi, and repair the relationship with Eris.
Most importantly, he leaves behind the diary.
Then he dies.
The older Rudeus cannot save his own family. His final act is to give another version of himself the knowledge required to save theirs.
10. Why the Rudeus Dark Future Matters
This alternate timeline is not a disposable “what if.”
It becomes one of the most important turning points in the main story.
After Future Rudeus dies, the younger Rudeus goes to the basement and finds the infected rat. Its violet crystal teeth confirm that the warning was real.
He kills the rat before it can infect Roxy.
He reads the diary and gains knowledge no one else in the main timeline possesses.
Because of that knowledge:
- Roxy and the child in her womb survive.
- Rudeus understands that Hitogami is targeting his family.
- He writes to Eris and begins repairing the misunderstanding between them.
- He takes action to protect Ariel’s path to the Asuran throne.
- He eventually forms the alliances that give his descendants a chance to oppose Hitogami.
Future Rudeus spends decades believing his life has become meaningless.
Yet his final decision changes everything.
The man who failed to protect his own future becomes the reason another future survives.
That is the emotional core of this storyline.
Mushoku Tensei does not say that regret can always be erased. Future Rudeus never receives his family back. His crimes do not disappear, and his suffering does not become noble simply because he performs one final good deed.
But even at the end of a ruined life, he is still capable of making one decision that matters.
You may not be able to undo every mistake. But the next choice can still prevent someone else—including your future self—from repeating it.
