But that’s exactly why Gabimaru the Hollow becomes so damn compelling.

Who exactly is Gabimaru? How strong is he really— to the point where people call him the top shinobi of the Iwagakure?
And most importantly… how did love—his love for his wife—change him into someone completely different?
1. Who Is Gabimaru the Hollow?
Gabimaru’s story doesn’t begin with monsters or immortality. It begins in a village that praises the strongest… and then tries to execute him the moment he steps out of line.
It’s not hard to find “top-tier ninja” characters who abandon their village—but someone who gets executed almost the moment they show up, like Gabimaru? That’s rare. Iwagakure doesn’t tolerate betrayal from its strongest. So they handed him over to the Shogunate government to be judged.
Our protagonist has a fairly small frame, with messy white hair that clearly isn’t styled or maintained regularly. Most of the time, he wears either a completely emotionless expression… or he flips into full slaughter mode and turns into that cold, lethal “silent killer” type. The only exception is his wife. When he’s near her—or even just talking about her—he gets visibly flustered, blushing like he doesn’t know what to do with himself.
Gabimaru can keep a calm face when danger is right in front of him. But once he relaxes? He’s surprisingly talkative. After dealing with Rokurota, he goes from rambling about flames, to reacting to monsters, to complaining that his leg hurts—one thing after another.
Because of how he was raised in the Iwagakure, Gabimaru is the kind of person who prioritizes the mission in front of him and pushes anything “unnecessary” aside. For example, the moment he steps onto the Paradise Island, he considers fighting between prisoners pointless and a waste of time. Instead, they should use every second to search for the Elixir of Life.
But despite being an assassin ninja, Gabimaru’s “soft skills” are… not great. The first time he met Yui, he had no idea how to express himself. And after arriving on the island, he made Mei cry three or four times—and every single time, his teammates had to scold him for it. His lack of emotional intelligence shows up again in the way he throws twisted, snarky comments at Sagiri when she’s exhausted. And honestly, that’s why when Gabimaru says he has a wife, even Gantetsusai and Fuchi look shocked. If the Iwagakure chief hadn’t married his daughter off to him, who knows how many years our main character would’ve stayed single purely through “skill issue.”
Now don’t get it twisted—being rough doesn’t mean Gabimaru is some clueless, harmless “good boy.” Especially with the changes we start seeing after he reaches the island. He protects Sagiri and the others, checks whether her injuries are okay. In the past, he told his wife not to feel insecure about hiding her scars. And on the island, he tells Mei something similar. His reasoning is that scars don’t define anything—and that the most beautiful girl he’s ever known has a scar that’s huge. That advice proves Gabimaru understands how much girls care about appearance and beauty—and he uses a real example to back it up.
2. Why Gabimaru Is the Strongest Ninja in Iwagakure
In the past, Gabimaru’s parents were killed by the Iwagakure chief when he was still very young. The reason? They tried to escape the village to live a normal life. The chief then raised Gabimaru himself and put him through brutal shinobi training. He was forged into an emotionless child—someone who barely cared about his own life, let alone anyone else’s. The chief saw him as the purest expression of “true talent,” an ideal specimen worthy of the title: “Gabimaru the Hollow.”
Gabimaru holds the reputation of being the strongest ninja in Iwagakure, admired by the entire village for how brutally he kills his opponents. And they admire him in the kind of way where they actually want to face him in a lethal, life-or-death duel.
Wearing Iwagakure’s symbol of power, Gabimaru’s talent truly matches the title the chief gave him— the strongest Gabimaru in history. And when he steps onto the island to compete for a pardon alongside the other prisoners, he instantly becomes one of the most feared individuals there—top one, top two on everyone’s danger list.

3. How Strong Is Gabimaru Through Intelligence?

If we’re only talking raw muscle, the world is never short on strong people. But what builds the true reputation of an assassin ninja isn’t just force—it’s the size of the brain behind it.
Years of experience turned Gabimaru into a tactical and combat genius. And the downside is: when he tries to explain things to others, it can get so deep that it starts sounding like textbook, nerd-level theory. Before stepping into a fight, he takes time to plan things out as carefully as possible. He can analyze an opponent’s strengths and weaknesses—and adapt fast when things go off-script.
In the battle with Rokurota, Gabimaru was the one who tested different approaches and concluded that it takes two people to bring him down. And after his first exchange with Jujin, he also quickly started mapping out how to deal with the Tensen in the future.
Another clear sign of his intelligence is how highly Shion values him. Shion chose Gabimaru to act as the instructor for the whole group in learning how to use Tao, while also helping plan combat strategies for what’s ahead. Gabimaru himself proposes several effective methods for fighting the Tensen—like how to steer the flow of Tao, how to channel Tao into weapons to create a propulsive, driving attack, and even how to force the Tensen to burn through most of their Tao.
4. Gabimaru’s Physical Ability and Endurance

And beyond that battle-hardened intelligence, the thing that made Gabimaru stand out since he was still tiny was his Physical Ability. The village chief judged it as a natural-born gift, far beyond every other child of his generation.
Gabimaru can pierce through human bodies—and other living creatures—without using a weapon at all. Early on after arriving on the island, he even used a spear as a lever to lift Keiun, who was several times larger than him. In the fight against Jujin, his physical power could match Jujin’s—and he could even tear apart Jujin’s body pieces faster than they could regenerate.
Under the Iwagakure Village’s harsh training, Gabimaru’s body is far beyond normal humans. He can manipulate his own body in abnormal ways—like dislocating his neck joints on purpose, stopping his heart, burning off the fat under his skin, and more.
But the most iconic proof is this: from the moment he was captured, no execution method could kill Gabimaru. His body is tougher than blades. Decapitation, burning, being torn apart, being boiled in oil—none of it could finish him off.
Gabimaru once revealed that an Iwagakure ninja can keep moving for ten days and nights without sleep—a terrifying level of endurance. And if I’m not mistaken, throughout his time on the island, Gabimaru never slept at all unless he passed out from exhaustion. And before he finally dropped, this guy was fighting like a maniac—no breaks, no slowing down.
5. Gabimaru’s Ninjutsu and Taijutsu

As one of Iwagakure’s purest representatives, most of Gabimaru’s damage comes from ninjutsu and taijutsu—the signature skills that separate a true ninja from an ordinary person.
The people of the Iwagakure Village go through training that sounds straight-up unreal. Gabimaru once said breathing fire is just the entry level—some shinobi can leap higher than the nine heavens, while others can literally blend into the ocean’s waves.
Most of Gabimaru’s ninjutsu revolves around fire. He can ignite the oil on his own skin to overwhelm and incinerate his opponents. In other cases, he pushes that firepower outward—blasting out massive flames to burn enemies down. He also mixes fire into other standard ninjutsu to amplify their destructive force. Some of the techniques he’s used include: Katon, Kurobi, Kakyo, Sekibō, Kyodō, Kizume, Onitsume, and more.
And beyond ninjutsu, Gabimaru is just as flexible with the taijutsu he was taught, applying it fluidly in combat. The classic example is his fight with Shija, where he chains techniques at insane speed—moves like Danen, Rokujan Nen, Kokkei, and others—so fast it barely looks human.
6. Gabimaru’s Tao, Flower Tao, and Regeneration

With the foundation of an elite ninja, Gabimaru also goes one step further: he awakens to Tao and starts using it proactively. He learns that the techniques taught in the ninja village are essentially applications of Tao. That’s why Gabimaru—along with that female ninja who proudly claims she has the biggest hips in the series—understands Tao more clearly than most newcomers who only recently started learning it.
Gabimaru’s Tao attribute is Fire. The moment he truly grasps Tao’s nature and how to use it, he can immediately apply it in battle. Even Tao practitioners who fight him compare his level of control to the Tensen, like his mastery isn’t far off at all.
When using Tao, Gabimaru can sense other people’s presence and even the structure of the architecture around him—something he demonstrates during his infiltration of the Hōrai Palace. In combat, his Tao can read an opponent’s movements and identify weaknesses within another person’s Tao.
Flower Tao and the Risk of Vegetification
There’s also a different branch that emerges from Gabimaru’s Tao: Flower Tao. When he was on the brink of death at Ran’s hands, he injected himself with one of Mu Dan's Kishikai stingers to trigger Flower Tao. This follows a theory Mei explained: if human Tao and flower Tao combine, then if Flower Tao “wins,” the person becomes plant-like—fully vegetated. But if they reach balance, the human gains Flower Tao’s power and enters a state similar to the Tensen.
Through sheer, abnormal willpower, Gabimaru reaches that balance—gaining Flower Tao’s regenerative ability. His body will recover no matter how severe the injury is. But the drawback is brutal: the more he regenerates, the faster the vegetification process accelerates. And once those roots dig deep enough into his body, Gabimaru will lose his humanity.
He makes that choice because he wants to return to his wife. He’ll trade everything for that.
7. How Love for Yui Changed Gabimaru
Gabimaru’s entire journey is always tied to this person—someone we don’t even officially see clearly until the final chapters. His wife keeps appearing in his memories, changing him, softening him… and at the same time, becoming the seed of a power greater than anything he’s ever had before.
Right from Chapter 1, Gabimaru’s love is stated with absolute certainty. He loves his wife—deeply. Her existence is everything to him, the single meaning of his life. And it’s exactly because he wants a simple, ordinary life with her that he asked to step away from the assassin-ninja world in the first place. Shija—who had been silently watching Gabimaru all along—also noticed it: ever since Gabimaru got married, the cold, ruthless version of him was already gone. And throughout the island journey, he keeps his wife’s name on his lips, moving with one goal in mind—to return to her.
By staying close to Yui, Gabimaru is gradually influenced by her kindness and the way she genuinely cares. And that becomes one of the forces pushing him back toward his humanity. He starts avoiding unnecessary killing. He begins to feel sorrow for the lives he’s taken. And when Sagiri pushes him to live as his “new self,” those changes become even clearer. He starts caring about others, worrying about them, learning empathy—learning how to understand.
When Gabimaru realizes Rien is Jofuku’s wife, he can’t bring himself to personally destroy the gilded body of her husband—because he understands what it means to love someone with everything you have. Gabimaru sees that the love he has for his wife is the only reason he’s alive—and that he’ll do whatever it takes, no matter the cost. That feeling runs so deep that even Yuzuriha’s early seduction attempts get rejected hard—he forcefully shuts her down and warns her that he already has a wife. And the further the journey goes, the more helpless his companions become, because this guy keeps dropping “my wife” in every conversation like it’s a reflex.
Gabimaru’s love for Yui is not separate from his strength. It is the reason he survives, changes, and continues moving forward.
