In the world of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, elves are built differently.
Their natural lifespan is so long that it borders on immortality. Some have lived for well over a thousand years without showing meaningful signs of aging. In a world where time creates experience, that lifespan can become an extraordinary advantage: deeper magical knowledge, larger mana reserves and technique refined far beyond the limits of most humans.
Yet only five elves have appeared in the manga so far.
The number is small for a reason. Frieren explains that elves generally lack strong romantic feelings and reproductive instincts. Individually, they can live for ages. As a race, however, they are slowly moving toward extinction.
That rarity makes every new elf feel important. These are not simply long-lived background characters. Each one reveals a different way an almost ageless person might use—or waste—the greatest advantage in the series: time.
So how do the five known elves compare in an actual power ranking?
This list places Milliarde, Minus, Frieren, Kraft and Serie from fifth to first by examining confirmed feats, magical ability, combat experience, matchup advantages and the limits of what the manga has actually shown.
Manga spoiler warning: This ranking discusses material beyond the first anime season, including Minus, the Empire Arc and later information about Serie.
Ranking method: A lower position does not necessarily mean a character is weak. Characters with limited combat evidence are placed below those with clearer feats, broader experience or more complete battle kits.
How the Frieren Elf Ranking Works
This ranking does not rely on mana alone.
Frieren repeatedly shows that combat depends on compatibility, preparation, distance and the ability to read an opponent. A warrior can defeat a mage by closing the gap. An assassin can kill someone with far greater destructive power. A carefully developed technique can matter more than centuries of raw magical growth.
For that reason, each elf is evaluated through five factors:
- Confirmed magical or physical feats
- Combat experience
- Versatility and available options
- Performance against difficult matchups
- The amount of reliable evidence currently available
With those standards established, the ranking begins with the elf whose talent may be terrifying—but whose combat record remains almost completely unknown.
Milliarde — The Artisan of Barriers
Milliarde is one of the most mysterious elves in the series. She appears only briefly through Frieren’s memories, yet the mark left by her craftsmanship is difficult to ignore.
She is taller than Frieren, has short blonde hair and carries an attitude of almost aggressive indifference. Milliarde does not appear interested in glory, war or recognition. She seems to pursue entertainment because a nearly endless life has made ordinary experiences painfully dull.
She is not portrayed as a frontline fighter.
What she does possess is barrier magic sophisticated enough to make even Frieren hesitate.
Milliarde created a barrier to protect a Boshaft wine cellar. The purpose was closer to a prank than a military operation, yet Frieren still required three months to analyze and break it.
That result deserves attention.
Frieren is one of the finest analysts of magical structures in the series. She has unraveled abilities connected to Serie and confronted the magic of the Seven Sages of Destruction, including Böse, Aura and Macht.
If a casual barrier created for Milliarde’s amusement can delay Frieren for three months, then her understanding of magical construction is not merely impressive. It is frightening.
Should Milliarde ever choose to weaponize that knowledge, barriers could become layered traps, prisons or controlled kill zones. Instead of attacking an opponent directly, she could redesign the space around them until escape becomes impossible.
Why Milliarde Ranks Fifth
Milliarde is not placed last because her magic appears weak.
She ranks fifth because the story provides the least evidence of how that talent performs in a real battle.
Serie is aggressive. Frieren has spent centuries killing demons. Minus is tied to war, and Kraft’s forgotten past is built around physical conflict.
Milliarde treats magic as a hobby.
Her barrier feat may indicate extraordinary technical ability, but she has no confirmed killer instinct and almost no demonstrated combat experience. Until the manga reveals more, fifth is the most defensible position.
Verdict: Milliarde may possess one of the most advanced specialized talents on the list, but specialization without combat evidence cannot place her above elves whose lives are directly tied to war.
Minus — The Witch of High Treason
Minus belongs to a completely different category.
She is not an ancient name mentioned only in a fading legend. Her role emerges through the Empire Arc, expanding the story’s image of what high-level elves can become when they enter politics, warfare and history.
Minus is known as the Witch of High Treason.
She possesses a Holy Emblem, identifying her as a Great Mage within the same broad class of recognition associated with Serie and Frieren.
Her title is not symbolic decoration.
Minus was accused of high treason after causing what is described as an endless war in the Southern Lands. That detail implies more than personal combat strength. She influenced conflicts deeply enough to alter the political and military reality of an entire region.
The available information about her fighting ability remains limited, but every surviving detail points toward enormous range and destructive scale.
Minus is implied to have created a sky-piercing column of light that erased Löwe’s hometown in a single night.
The most disturbing part is that the destruction was not framed as her ultimate move. It was collateral damage—one place caught inside the blast radius of a larger war.
If a city can disappear as a side effect of someone’s battle, then ordinary mages are not operating on the same scale.
How Minus Was Defeated
Minus died roughly twenty years before the present timeline, around eleven years after Himmel’s death.
The person who defeated her was Löwe.
At the time, he was an unknown warrior. He later became one of the Empire’s Shadow Warriors, assassins trained specifically to hunt and eliminate mages.
Rumors may describe their battle as a draw or suggest that both combatants died. The surviving evidence points in another direction: Löwe lived and kept Minus’s Holy Emblem as a trophy.
Her defeat can be explained through two possibilities that fit the combat system of Frieren.
1. A Hard Counter
Shadow Warriors specialize in the exact conditions mages fear: concealed mana, speed, silence and close-range execution.
If Minus’s greatest weapons require enormous range, forcing her into close quarters could remove the space needed to use them safely. A spell capable of destroying a city is not useful when its caster would be standing inside the same blast zone.
2. Arrogance
A Great Mage who helped shape wars may have underestimated a human warrior.
In this world, that mistake can erase every advantage before the battle truly begins.
Why Minus Ranks Fourth
Minus is not fourth because her destructive power is unimpressive.
She is fourth because her growth stopped two decades ago.
Frieren and Serie continued surviving, studying and adapting. Minus did not. Her defeat also proves that her enormous scale did not protect her from an opponent built to exploit the weaknesses of mages.
Even so, the destruction associated with the column of light places her far beyond ordinary spellcasters.
Verdict: Minus may possess the largest confirmed destructive feat among the elves below Serie, but a limited record and a fatal close-range matchup keep her at number four.
Frieren — Frieren the Slayer
At number three is the face of the series itself.
Frieren is one of the most famous mages in modern history, and the title Frieren the Slayer comes from a brutal achievement: she has killed more demons than any other mage in recorded history.
Her talent is recognized immediately by the strongest people around her.
Serie calls her strong when they first meet. Lügner describes her as a genius. Her mana, accumulated across more than a thousand years, is monstrous by the standards of most living beings—including high-ranking demons such as Aura.
Yet Frieren’s greatest advantage is not simply the size of her mana pool.
It is her ability to understand magic, isolate its assumptions and dismantle it.
She has analyzed and broken the magic of Aura the Guillotine and Macht of the Golden Land. With the Hero Party, she also helped destroy the supposedly impenetrable barrier of Böse the Immortal.
Frieren is not the strongest mage through raw power. She does not possess one overwhelming signature spell comparable to the Seven Sages of Destruction.
She may, however, be the most efficient demon slayer in the entire story.
Mana Concealment: The Technique Demons Misread
Frieren has spent most of her life refining mana suppression to deceive demons.
Serie considers the technique inefficient. Training mana concealment for one or two centuries would normally be insufficient to fool demons because they are extraordinarily sensitive to mana. Without a natural talent for suppression, those centuries could have produced greater power elsewhere.
Yet Serie also acknowledges why the technique can become priceless.
In a fight between veteran mages, one mistake in reading an opponent’s mana can decide the battle.
Frieren’s concealment is so consistent that demons repeatedly mistake her for an ordinary, weak mage. Even highly mana-sensitive beings such as Stille and Aura fail to detect meaningful fluctuations.
Only a small number of characters have recognized the deception immediately, including Serie, the Demon King and Lernen.
This apparently inefficient skill becomes a weapon because demons trust mana as an objective measure of status. Frieren turns that confidence against them.
How Frieren Uses Offensive Magic
Frieren has optimized the spells that work best against demons.
The clearest example is Zoltraak. Modern humans consider it basic offensive magic, but its history and properties still make it extremely effective against demons when used by a master.
Beyond Zoltraak, Frieren has access to a wide range of elemental and high-level spells for battlefield control, defense and large-area damage.
During the First-Class Mage Exam, the Spiegel clone of Frieren uses an ability that Fern describes as the pinnacle of magic. Frieren admits that she had not needed to use it for eighty years.
The scene suggests that even after extensive exposure, Fern still has not seen every level of Frieren’s combat ability.
The Hero Party Taught Frieren How to Win With Others
The final advantage separating Frieren from many ancient mages is team-based battle strategy.
Traveling with Himmel, Heiter and Eisen taught her that victory does not come only from individual strength. It comes from understanding the personalities and limitations of allies, then building a plan an opponent cannot predict.
That knowledge is especially important in a world where compatibility can overturn differences in mana.
Why Frieren Ranks Third
Frieren possesses better confirmed combat feats and far greater versatility than Milliarde or Minus.
She has repeatedly defeated enemies whose magic appears impossible to understand, and her experience against demons is unmatched.
She remains at number three because the two elves above her present different kinds of problems: one is a close-range warrior with an ancient and potentially complete combat kit, while the other stands above modern magic as its living authority.
Verdict: Frieren is not the elf with the greatest raw power. She is the elf most consistently equipped to turn knowledge, deception and teamwork into a victory against demons.
Kraft — The Warrior of Forgotten Legends
Kraft makes this ranking difficult in the best possible way.
He is introduced as an elf monk, but his origin lies in another role: warrior.
The most important confirmed detail about Kraft is his age. He is older than Frieren and casually refers to her as young.
Coming from an elf, that word carries unusual weight. Someone more than a thousand years old can still be treated as part of a younger generation.
A Heroic Past So Old That History Forgot It
Kraft’s accomplishments extend so far into the past that the modern world no longer remembers them.
Statues imply that he once fought beside a human priest companion and achieved something important enough to be commemorated. The identities of their enemies and the exact scale of their victory have been lost.
The manga does not confirm whether they fought an ancient Demon King or a threat from the Mythical Era. What it does establish is the atmosphere surrounding Kraft: he is a hero whose deeds survived longer in stone than in human memory.
Kraft Is a Natural Predator of Mages
Even without confirmed spellcasting, Kraft is physically terrifying.
He remains a top-level warrior with extreme conditioning, powerful musculature and close-range technique refined over an enormous lifespan.
His encounter involving Übel and a group of bandits demonstrates how little effort he needs to control ordinary physical opponents. A light strike can send someone through the air.
That style is naturally dangerous to mages.
Spellcasters are most vulnerable when an enemy closes the distance before they can construct a defense. Kraft has the speed, body and experience to turn that condition into his preferred battlefield.
Against Frieren, the matchup becomes especially complicated if she has not already established support magic or a defensive position.
Could Kraft Use Goddess Magic?
Unconfirmed possibility: The manga has not explicitly stated that Kraft can use the Magic of the Goddess.
Kraft is a devoted follower of the Goddess and carries scripture in a manner associated with priests such as Heiter.
That visual connection does not prove he can perform Goddess Magic. It does, however, make the possibility difficult to dismiss—especially given his extraordinary age.
Goddess Magic can include curse resistance, advanced healing and light-based attacks that ordinary magical defenses may struggle to answer.
If Kraft has access to even part of that system, his battle kit becomes unusually complete: elite physical offense, endurance, defensive support and recovery.
Why Kraft Ranks Second
Frieren is a pure mage, and warriors generally gain a major advantage once they reach close range.
Kraft is not an ordinary warrior. He is an ancient elf who appears to have survived a heroic era the modern world has forgotten.
If he can also use healing or defensive Goddess Magic, he becomes a walking fortress with no obvious weakness at close to mid range.
The uncertainty surrounding his full abilities prevents a definitive conclusion. Even so, the combination of age, physical specialization and matchup pressure is enough to place him above Frieren in this ranking.
Verdict: Kraft’s second-place position depends partly on inference, but his confirmed age and warrior foundation create one of the most dangerous possible matchups for a mage.
Serie — The Strongest Elf in Frieren
At number one, there is no serious alternative.
Serie is the Great Mage and the founder of the Continental Magic Association.
She is not simply an exceptionally powerful spellcaster. She is a living embodiment of the Mythical Era, when magic existed in forms more violent, instinctive and incomprehensible than anything the modern world can easily reproduce.
While Frieren chose to travel quietly and watch humanity change, Serie placed herself above that change.
Through the Association, she controls enormous political and military influence. She shapes the standards of mage society, selects the people allowed to enter its highest ranks and continuously expands a collection of magic that has already survived multiple eras.
Her power belongs to a category beyond conventional combat.
It resembles absolute authority.
1. Serie’s Mana
Serie possesses an amount of mana accumulated across a span of time that feels almost eternal.
Even the mana she displays while suppressing herself is comparable to Frieren’s unrestricted mana. Because Serie is continually concealing her true level, the full scale of her reserve remains unknown.
This means Frieren’s enormous mana—already sufficient to overwhelm ancient demons—may represent only the surface of Serie’s actual capacity.
2. Serie’s Knowledge
Serie holds knowledge of an extraordinary range of magic, including spells lost since the Mythical Era.
That library gives her near-limitless adaptability.
A specialist can dominate one situation. Serie can search across centuries of magical knowledge for an answer suited to almost any situation.
The advantage is not simply that she knows more spells. It is that she has lived long enough to understand when and why each one should be used.
3. Reflexes and Casting Speed
Serie’s confrontation with Macht demonstrates casting speed and visualization operating almost like instinct.
She can produce defensive magic and counterattacks with minimal separation, without the chanting time or visible preparation required by many modern mages.
This matters because vast knowledge becomes useful only when the caster can access the correct answer before the opponent finishes attacking.
Serie can.
4. Fürwehrer and the Authority to Transfer Spells
One of Serie’s most unusual abilities is Fürwehrer, the magic used to transfer spells.
Serie can create a grimoire containing a complete understanding of a spell and grant that knowledge to another person.
That ability is larger than ordinary spellcasting.
It gives Serie control over how magical knowledge is distributed. She does not merely possess a library; she can decide who receives pieces of it and how the future of magic develops.
5. Serie’s Intuition
Frieren states that Serie’s intuition is always correct.
During the third stage of the First-Class Mage Exam, Serie can judge who deserves to pass through direct personal evaluation. She appears capable of reading important parts of an examinee’s nature almost immediately.
This intuition strengthens every other advantage she possesses. Serie does not need to understand a person through prolonged observation when her first judgment is already dangerously accurate.
Why Serie Ranks First
Serie is the benchmark against which every major mage is measured.
She has greater mana than Frieren, a deeper library than any modern magician, casting speed capable of matching the strongest opponents and institutional authority that allows her to shape an entire continent’s magical culture.
Kraft may create a difficult physical matchup. Frieren may be the better demon hunter. Minus may have produced greater visible destruction in one event.
None of them currently possesses Serie’s combination of power, knowledge, speed, adaptability and control.
Verdict: Serie is not merely the strongest known elf. She is the standard used to define the upper limit of magical power in the current Frieren universe.
