One Piece Chapter 1190 theory turns one of the manga’s most iconic weapons into a far more unsettling mystery.
Dracule Mihawk’s Yoru is already extraordinary. It is a permanent Black Blade, one of the twelve Supreme Grade Blades and the weapon carried by the world’s strongest swordsman. Its size, cross-shaped design and reputation have always separated it from ordinary named swords.
Then Imu revealed an arsenal linked to the nineteen rulers who created the World Government eight hundred years ago.
Those weapons are not merely valuable antiques. The Void Sword drains life. Gram can withstand an attack powerful enough to defeat a Lunarian commander. Longinus changes the threat facing Sanji. Each weapon appears to carry a specialized power—and Imu can seemingly reproduce or restore that power for selected servants.
That raises a dangerous question: could Yoru be connected to the same forgotten weapon system?
Theory boundary: Yoru’s status as a Supreme Grade Black Blade is established. Its connection to Imu, the founding monarchs or an unknown Celestial Dragon bloodline is not. This article evaluates the theory without presenting those links as confirmed history.
1. Why Mihawk’s Yoru Is Already Exceptional
Yoru does not need a hidden connection to Imu to qualify as one of the most important weapons in One Piece.
It belongs to the highest known class of named weapons: the twelve Supreme Grade Blades. It is also one of the few confirmed Black Blades, its dark surface permanently transformed rather than temporarily coated during combat.
Mihawk refers to Yoru as the world’s strongest Black Blade. That description fits its owner, but it also gives the weapon a reputation of its own.
Its appearance is equally distinctive. Yoru resembles an enormous Latin cross, with a curved black blade, an ornate golden guard and jewel-like decorations. It looks ceremonial, religious and martial at the same time.
The visual resemblance to the Empty Throne is not exact, yet the theory begins here. Both designs combine royal authority, weaponry and a cross-like structure. In a story where inherited objects often carry history, that resemblance is difficult to dismiss completely.
Confirmed: Yoru is a Supreme Grade Black Blade owned by Dracule Mihawk.
Unconfirmed: Yoru once belonged to a founding monarch, was created through Imu’s power or was inherited through a hidden noble bloodline.
2. What Imu’s Nineteen Ancient Weapons Reveal
The weapons associated with the founding rulers change how the Empty Throne should be understood.
The nineteen monarchs left their weapons around the throne as a public promise: no single ruler would claim authority over the others. The image was designed to represent equality among the families that created the World Government.
Imu’s existence already exposes that promise as a lie.
The restored weapons make the deception even deeper. Imu does not merely sit above the founding families. Imu appears able to summon the power connected to their ancestral weapons and place that power in the hands of current servants.
Several names or provisional translations have already been associated with this arsenal, including:
- Nemesis, linked to divine punishment.
- Stigma, associated with destruction or vengeance.
- The Void Sword, rendered in early translations as Vohu or Bahu.
- Tohu, connected to chaos.
- Gram, the Sword of Wrath.
- Longinus, the Holy Spear used by Killingham.
- Fragarach, the Sea God Sword.
- Muramasa, whose complete form remains unclear.
- The Xing Tian Axe, prepared as an execution weapon for Luffy.
Ten of the nineteen remain unidentified.
The mystery is no longer only about their names. It is about their nature. Are these physical relics, supernatural reproductions or manifestations of power Imu has preserved for centuries?
3. The Void Sword Shows That Every Weapon May Have Its Own Ability
The Void Sword offers the clearest evidence that these are more than unusually sharp weapons.
When it appears, nearby vegetation withers. Trees lose their vitality as though life itself is being pulled from the area. The effect resembles Crocodile’s ability to drain moisture, but the sword appears to consume something deeper than water.
Once the blade pierces Luffy, his resistance collapses. His eyes lose focus, his voice fails and even Gear Five cannot immediately free him. Usopp senses his captain’s presence weakening from far across Elbaph.
The simplest reading is that the Void Sword continuously drains the life force of anything it impales.
Gram reveals a different specialization. It withstands Zoro’s King of Hell attack, an assault strong enough to defeat King while the Lunarian’s defenses were vulnerable. Longinus has not yet revealed its complete function, but its transformation suggests another weapon with a unique inherited ability.
If every founding weapon possesses a separate power, then their ranking cannot be judged by craftsmanship alone. A weapon’s value may depend on the ability bound to it, the family associated with it and the amount of power Imu can restore through it.
The nineteen weapons may sit outside the ordinary blade-ranking system. A Supreme Grade Blade is judged as a masterwork. Imu’s relics may function more like supernatural contracts given physical form.
4. Are Imu’s Summoned Weapons Copies Rather Than the Originals?
The most convincing clue comes from the way the weapons appear in battle.
Sommers receives Gram through Imu’s power, yet another manifestation of Gram can appear during a separate confrontation. If the same weapon exists in more than one place, the summoned form is unlikely to be the original physical sword resting beside the Empty Throne.
The transformed weapons also preserve parts of the user’s existing equipment.
Killingham’s weapon retains its familiar handle while the blade changes into Longinus. Sommers’ weapon follows a similar pattern: the hilt and structure remain connected to the weapon already in his hand, while the active blade is recreated through Imu’s power.
This suggests a layered process.
- The servant provides a physical weapon as the base.
- Imu overlays the form associated with an ancient relic.
- The recreated blade carries at least part of the original ability.
- The historical weapon near the Empty Throne may remain untouched.
Under this interpretation, Imu is not distributing museum pieces. Imu is reproducing their power.
That distinction matters for Yoru. If the ancient arsenal can be copied, then Yoru does not need to be one of the nineteen original objects to share a connection with them. It could instead belong to the same tradition, carry a related power or descend from a weapon created through a similar process.
5. Could the Weapons Contain the Will, Lifespan or Souls of Their Owners?
Sommers describes the weapons as having been restored or revived. That language opens the door to a more disturbing possibility: something inside the weapons may have survived after their owners died.
One Piece repeatedly treats will as a force capable of outliving the individual. Imu’s Covenant system adds another mechanism. Imu can grant immortality and extraordinary power to servants, maintain control through a mark and remove that protection when obedience fails.
Saturn’s death demonstrates the imbalance clearly. The life Imu grants is not truly owned by the recipient. It can be taken back.
The theory extends that mechanism into the Void Century.
Perhaps the founding rulers did not begin with divine weapons. They may have entered a Covenant that exchanged lifespan, freedom or a portion of their will for greater military power against the Ancient Kingdom.
Imu could then have preserved what was surrendered and attached it to the rulers’ weapons.
In that scenario, the nineteen relics are not simply enchanted swords and spears. They are containers for power extracted through a contract.
The founders believed they were receiving weapons strong enough to create a new world. They may actually have been giving Imu permanent ownership over their strength.
The visual language supports the possibility without proving it. The rulers shown fighting Joy Boy appear marked by shapes resembling the dark flames associated with Imu’s transformed servants. The similarity may suggest control, but it remains interpretation rather than confirmation.
6. Why There Are Nineteen Weapons Instead of Twenty
The alliance that founded the World Government contained twenty monarchs, but the Empty Throne is surrounded by nineteen weapons.
The established explanation is Queen Nefertari D. Lili.
Lili refused to become a World Noble and did not leave her weapon as part of the ceremony. She attempted to return to Arabasta, then disappeared before reaching home.
That makes the number nineteen internally consistent: the weapons represent the rulers who remained in Mary Geoise and became the ancestors of the Celestial Dragons.
The Yoru theory introduces a more speculative variation. What if another ruler initially joined Imu’s system, later discovered the truth and escaped with a weapon that should have remained under Imu’s control?
Such a development could explain why a unique weapon survived outside Mary Geoise and eventually reached Mihawk. It would also create a parallel with characters who escaped the Covenant by severing the marked limb or otherwise breaking Imu’s control.
However, this is one of the theory’s weakest steps. Lili already explains the missing twentieth weapon. Adding another escaped ruler would require the story to revise what the nineteen swords represent.
Important limitation: The existence of nineteen weapons does not currently provide evidence that Mihawk descends from a twentieth founder. That possibility only becomes viable if later chapters reveal that one ancestral weapon left Mary Geoise through a separate betrayal.
7. The Case for Connecting Yoru to the Founding Families
The theory rests on four observations.
Yoru Looks Ceremonial Enough to Belong to a Royal Line
Its enormous cross-shaped frame, gold decoration and jewel-like details give it the appearance of a weapon made to represent authority, not merely combat efficiency.
Its Design Echoes the Empty Throne
The resemblance is not literal, but both use an imposing cross-like silhouette and ornamental geometry. In a visual story, repeating such shapes can signal shared history.
Mihawk’s Eyes Resemble Imu’s
Mihawk’s ringed eyes remain one of his most mysterious physical features. Imu also possesses unusual ringed eyes, which naturally encourages speculation about lineage or a shared ability.
Eye design alone is not proof. Other characters possess unusual eyes without belonging to the same family. Still, when combined with Yoru’s appearance, the detail gives the theory more emotional force.
Yoru’s Name Means “Night”
The meaning fits the darker naming pattern surrounding several of Imu’s weapons: void, chaos, destruction and punishment.
A weapon called Night would not feel out of place inside that arsenal.
The most complete version of the theory proposes that Mihawk inherited Yoru from a parent or ancestor descended from a founding family that left Mary Geoise. Yoru then became a permanent Black Blade through generations of battle or through Mihawk’s own mastery, while the weapons abandoned at the throne rusted in silence.
It is a compelling story: one weapon escaped the system, continued fighting and grew stronger, while the obedient relics became lifeless symbols until Imu reproduced their power.
8. The Strongest Counterarguments to the Yoru Theory
A good theory must survive its own weaknesses.
Yoru Already Has a Complete Explanation
Yoru is powerful because it is a Supreme Grade Blade wielded by Mihawk and transformed into a Black Blade. The story does not need an additional connection to Imu to justify its status.
Visual Similarity Is Not Historical Evidence
Crosses, jewels and royal ornamentation are common design elements. Yoru resembling the Empty Throne may reflect style rather than shared origin.
Mihawk Has No Confirmed Founding-Family Lineage
His ancestry remains unknown. Ringed eyes and an unusual weapon are not enough to identify him as a former Celestial Dragon or descendant of one of the twenty monarchs.
The Ancient Weapons May Not Be Ranked Blades
Imu’s weapons appear to operate through supernatural abilities and Covenants. They may not belong to the same grading system as Yoru, Ace, Murakumogiri or other famous blades.
The Nineteen-Weapon Count Is Already Explained by Lili
Any theory involving another missing or escaped founder must overcome the established role of Queen Lili.
These objections do not destroy the theory. They define the evidence future chapters would need to provide:
- A direct historical link between Yoru and Mary Geoise.
- A former owner connected to one of the founding families.
- Confirmation that the ancient weapons can survive outside Imu’s control.
- A reason Mihawk possesses the blade despite living outside the Celestial Dragon world.
- A clearer explanation of the similarity between Mihawk’s and Imu’s eyes.
